Neo-Ottomanism and Cool Japan in comparative perspective

Abstract Turkey and Japan have comparable histories of modernization beginning in the nineteenth century. They since then produced modernities that are considered a mix “Eastern” “Western.” Over recent decades, both faced question what comes after modernity began manufacturing their versions authenticities cultural exports. This paper comparatively locates two symptoms this process. “Neo-Ottomanism” refers to increasing consumption Turkey’s imperial past while “Cool Japan” emphasizes popular products entertainment, fashion, youth culture, food, intending shift Japan’s image “cool” place. Both projects, different ways, sponsored by state; yet reception culture illustrates vexed relationship between state culture: states endeavor colonize for own interests, provides avenues outwit state’s attempts. Popular culture’s autonomy contexts has do with collapse traditional hierarchies, which paved ways promotion export new identity claims. Local global representations neo-Ottomanism Cool differ. Internally, they fragmented; externally, linked international “soft power,” offer alternatives regional areas influence.
